Tram and light rail passenger figures continue to climb

According to the data from the Department for Transport, the urban systems are proving popular with customers, carrying a total of 204 million passengers last year and completing 14.5 million vehicle miles.

This marks the highest annual figure for passengers on light rail and trams to date, with growth driven by London's Croydon Tramlink and Docklands Light Railway in particular.

The two London services have seen a jump in volumes of almost 60 per cent since 2004-05, rising by eight per cent year on year in 2011-12, while other parts of the country have seen statistics remain largely stable.

According to the South London Press, a £55 million "super tram" has been proposed to Southwark Councillors, potentially running between Denmark Hill and London Bridge, linking areas of the capital including Camberwell Green and Elephant & Castle.
