London Gateway port project developing rapidly

The London Gateway Port is a major infrastructure project by Dubai Ports World that will "transform the way goods are distributed in the UK", according to the Financial Times.

Speaking to the news source, London Gateway chief executive Simon Moore explained using shipping rather than road transport is becoming increasingly cost-effective as fuel prices continue to rise.

He added: "We're reconnecting the UK's biggest economic zone directly with our biggest suppliers in China, south-east Asia and the Indian subcontinent."

Situated 25 miles east of the capital, the London Gateway Port will be able to receive modern cargo ships of up to 400m in length and will be the largest port in the UK, with a major logistics park on the site.

Dredging and new land creation is being carried out to create the deep-sea container port, which is expected to generate 12,000 direct positions and over 20,000 indirect jobs when it is in operation.
