Drivers warned of satnav distraction risk |
Research carried out by a team in the UK found that driving performance is affected when people are listening to their satnavs, for example travelling faster when following complex instructions.
The experts from Lancaster University and Royal Holloway, University of London, discovered that individuals tended to make more steering variations when using the technology and were less likely to be aware of pedestrians who could step out in front of them.
"A lot of effort has gone into designing visually friendly sat nav devices but our research highlights the importance of the way in which the auditory instructions are given," remarked Dr Polly Dalton of Royal Holloway's Department of Psychology.
Satnavs have been criticised before for sending motorists in the wrong direction and signs were recently put up in Chatham, Kent, warning drivers not to believe systems that send them through a newly-built bus station.
