Fall in petrol prices could benefit UK transport companies |
Commenting on the decline, which could benefit transport and freight businesses, AA head of public affairs Paul Watters called for greater transparency when it comes to petrol costs.
Speaking in a BBC Wake Up to Money podcast, he remarked: "We believe from our analysis that prices in other parts of Europe have fallen more quickly following the dramatic crash in wholesale prices."
The expert pointed out that global oil markets dropped in April and May 2012 and suggested some retailers appear to be keeping prices higher than they need to be, "particularly diesel".
According to Mr Watt, in some parts of Europe diesel prices have dropped below petrol costs, but the UK has seen them remain relatively high.
He also warned a further climb in fuel duty is due to take effect "unless the chancellor has a change of heart".
Mr Watt's remarks come after the fall in petrol prices pushed inflation in the UK down in May 2012 to levels last seen two-and-a-half years ago.
