Questions raised about speed limiters road safety benefits

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), it is not clear whether the devices would reduce road accidents and the organisation is "not convinced" they could play a major role in cutting the number of crashes each year.

A spokesman for the driving standards charity explained that in most crashes, breaking the speed limit is not the cause, adding 30 mph can be too much in towns and cities, while drivers who hit a tree on rural roads can be killed at 40 mph.

He added: "For us, educating drivers to recognise the right speed for every hazard is the best long-term solution."

The IAM expert's comments come after a transportation industry body called for speed limiters to be fitted to vans by manufacturers at no additional cost to customers in order to curb top speeds at 70 mph.
